What a brand mention in AI is
Brand mentions in AI are the times an assistant such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google’s AI features names your business in an answer. Three things get mixed up:
- A mention is your name in the answer text.
- A citation is a link to one of your pages as a source for the answer.
- A recommendation is the assistant picking you, for example as the first plumber it suggests.
You can have any one without the others. This article is part of our AI search optimization library. It covers where mentions come from, what the studies say, how to earn them honestly, and how to track them.
Where brand mentions in AI come from
An assistant draws on two layers, which we describe in where ChatGPT gets its information: what a model learned in training, and what it finds when it searches the web for a question. Mentions come from pages in either layer.
- Your own pages. Your website and your profiles state who you are, what you do and where. These are the pages you control.
- Other sites that name you. Directories, local news, associations, supplier pages, forums, review sites and social posts. Google’s guide says its generative AI features can show what is being said about products and services across the web.
- Structured business data. Listings and profiles that hold your name, address, phone and hours. Google says Business Profile data can help your products and services be visible in AI responses. We do not know which listings feed which assistant, which is why we suggest keeping them all consistent.
- Whatever the question brings up. The question decides which pages are searched. A question about “a plumber in Somerville” brings up different pages than a question about your company by name.
Nobody outside the assistant knows how these are weighed for a given answer.
What the studies show
Three studies shed light, each with limits.
| Study | Who and when | What it found | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI Overview brand visibility | Ahrefs, May 2025; 75,000 brands, Spearman correlation | Branded web mentions correlated 0.664 with brand mentions in Google AI Overviews. Branded anchors 0.527, branded search volume 0.392, domain rating 0.326, referring domains 0.295, backlinks 0.218 | Domains with a Domain Rating above 40 and a top keyword of at least 800 searches a month, so mostly larger brands. Ahrefs: correlation is not causation; all factors showed moderate to very weak correlations |
| AI summary sources | Pew Research Center, July 2025; 68,879 Google searches from 900 US adults | Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit made up 15% of the sources in AI summaries; 88% of summaries cited three or more sources | US panel from March 2025; Google only; not about local businesses |
| Gemini local answers | Steady Demand, reported by MarTech August 2026; 1,487 queries, 14,472 citations | Nearly 60% of citations went to business websites; Reddit was second at 13.7%. Gemini and ChatGPT cited the same domains 8% of the time | Gemini and ChatGPT only; we saw the MarTech report, not the full study |
Read together: a local business’s own website is the biggest single source in the one local study. Other sites that name you still matter, and what ranks in one assistant often differs in another. The Ahrefs result suggests that being talked about widely goes with being named, but a 75,000-brand sample of larger sites does not prove that a plumber who gets more mentions will be named more.
How to earn brand mentions honestly
You cannot make an assistant mention you. You can make it easy and make it true.
- Use one spelling of your business name on your site, your Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp and social profiles. Match the address and phone too. Our local SEO and AI search visibility page covers this.
- State what you are known for, in text. A line like “family-owned HVAC company serving Cambridge and Somerville since [year]” is a fact an assistant can repeat. Only write what is true. The E-E-A-T guide shows how to prove it on the page.
- Get listed where real businesses like yours are listed. Your local chamber or trade association, the manufacturers and suppliers whose products you install, and local community pages you take part in. Ask for an accurate name, link and description.
- Be the source local writers use. A short, dated, factual page, such as average job prices in your area with what moves them, is something a local reporter or blogger can quote and link.
- Earn reviews from real customers and reply to them. They carry the words customers use for your service and your area.
- Take part in communities as yourself. If you answer questions on a forum, say who you are, answer fully, and do not post the same promotional text everywhere.
What does not work
- Buying or faking mentions. Google’s guide lists seeking inauthentic mentions across the web as less helpful than it seems, and says its generative AI features depend on both its ranking systems and its spam systems.
- Mass-produced guest posts and directory spam. If it would embarrass you in front of a customer, skip it.
- “We guarantee mentions in ChatGPT.” Nobody can guarantee placement in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google’s AI features. Ask any provider to show a method, not a promise.
How to track brand mentions in ChatGPT and AI search
It is possible to track brand mentions in AI, but only as a sample. The same question can give different answers on different days. In the Steady Demand study, repeated Gemini searches shared about 40% of their cited sources and named the same top business about 7% of the time. So one check tells you little; a pattern over months tells you something.
A quick mention check
A full monthly tracking routine is its own job. For this article, the point is narrower: find out which sources produce your mentions, so you know where to earn more.
- Ask a few questions of three kinds: your name (“is [business] any good”), your category in your area (“[service] in [town]”), and comparisons (“[business] vs [competitor]”). Use a fresh chat and ask each twice.
- For each answer, note whether you were named and which sources were cited.
- Open the cited pages. They show which sites the assistant leans on for your category and your town, which is your shortlist for the earning steps above. Wrong facts there usually trace back to one profile or page you can fix.
Free reports from the platforms
- Google Search Console. Google’s 2026 guide points to a Generative AI performance report in Search Console. It shows how people reach your content through Google’s generative AI features. It reports your site’s activity, not what Gemini or ChatGPT say about your name.
- Bing Webmaster Tools. Microsoft’s AI Performance report (public preview, announced February 2026) shows total citations, cited pages and a sample of grounding queries across Microsoft Copilot, Bing’s AI summaries and select partner integrations. Microsoft says it does not show ranking or a page’s role in an answer. It counts citations, so our reading is that a name mentioned without a cited link may not appear.
- Business Profile performance. Calls, directions, messages, website clicks and bookings for a verified profile. It does not tell you the source, but a rise after you fix your profile is a useful signal.
Paid tracking tools
Tools that track brand mentions in ChatGPT and other assistants typically run a fixed list of prompts on a schedule and log the answers: the check above, automated. Google says no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems, so any tool is sampling visible answers. For a local business, a paid tool is rarely the first spend; earning accurate mentions comes first.
Media mentions
For ordinary news and web mentions of your name (the older meaning of “brand mentions”), set up an alert for your business name and the owner’s name with any alerting tool, and review them monthly.
What to do when AI says something wrong
Find the source in the cited links, fix it there, and ask again in a new chat. For a wrong fact on your own site, correct the page and add a visible “Updated” date. For wrong facts on a directory, claim and edit the listing. There is no published timeline for when a fix shows up in answers, so plan on weeks and re-check monthly.
How Magnet Mint can help
We build websites that customers, Google and AI assistants can read, and the GEO/AEO audit (from $750) records what the main assistants say about your business before and after the fixes. You can also start with a free demo. Prices are as of October 2026.
