After-hours answering: calls that arrive when you are closed
Customers do not call only between 9 and 5. A heating system fails on a Saturday night. A pipe leaks on Sunday. A new patient looks for a practice after dinner, and a homeowner compares three roofers at 9pm. If the call goes to voicemail, some callers leave a message and some do not.
An after-hours answering service closes that gap. Magnet Mint sets up AI after-hours answering for service businesses in Boston and Greater Boston, and remotely for owners across the US. It is part of our AI phone answering service, and the hub for the whole group is AI receptionist.
Nights, weekends and holidays, as you define them
We write your closed hours into the call flow: weeknight evenings, weekends, holidays and any days you take off. For a Massachusetts business that includes Patriots’ Day, Juneteenth and other days you choose. Outside those times, the phone rings in your office or on your mobile as it does today. Inside them, the assistant answers.
Because it answers in software, “24/7” is a choice, not a staffing problem. You can cover the hours after 5pm, weekends only, or around the clock. You can change the schedule later, for example for a holiday week.
The emergency rules you set
This is the part that matters most for trades and clinics. Not every after-hours call is an emergency, and an on-call person who is woken up for a routine question will stop answering.
So you decide the rules, and we write them down:
- Wakes the on-call person. Calls that match your definition of an emergency. For a plumber, that could be active flooding or a gas smell. For an HVAC company, no heat in winter for a household with a baby or an elderly resident. For a property manager, a lockout or water coming from the unit above. You choose the list.
- Waits until morning. Quotes, scheduling, general questions and anything that can reasonably wait. The assistant takes the details and your team handles them first thing.
- Goes straight to a person. Any caller who asks for a person gets the on-call route or the option to leave a message, depending on your rules.
The assistant asks the short questions your rules depend on, such as “Is water running now?” It does not make the emergency decision for you. It applies your rules and passes the call on. There is more on setting these rules for HVAC and plumbing in after-hours emergency calls.
What the AI never promises
An AI after-hours service must not make promises your team cannot keep. Ours does not promise dispatch. It does not give arrival times, and it does not quote prices you have not approved. It tells the caller their request has been passed to the on-call person.
The assistant is not an emergency service. If a caller may be in danger, for example because they mention a fire or a gas smell, they first hear safety wording that you write and approve, such as which emergency number to call. We put that wording in the written scope and test it before launch.
In clinics and law firms the assistant gives no medical or legal advice. Patient information is also limited: under HIPAA, a name tied to an appointment request counts as protected health information, so every vendor in the chain (phone, AI, texting and booking tool) must sign a business associate agreement before the assistant takes booking requests. Without that, it gives general answers and points callers to the practice’s booking system or front desk. See AI receptionist for clinics.
What happens on an after-hours call
- Greeting and disclosure. The assistant answers with your business name and says it is an AI assistant. If you record calls, it announces recording. Massachusetts requires all-party consent, and this is not legal advice.
- Approved answers. It answers hours, services and service area from the list you approved.
- Triage. It asks your emergency questions.
- Alert or message. An emergency goes to the on-call person as an alert, or by transfer where your phone setup allows it. Anything else becomes a message.
- Morning summary. Your team gets a list of every call overnight: who, what, how urgent and what was said.
Transfer or alert depends on your phone setup, and we agree it in the written scope. The caller never hears a promise the setup cannot support.
After hours or overflow: which do you need?
After-hours answering covers hours you are closed. If your problem is open hours, when staff are on another line or on a job site, you want overflow call answering. The two use the same assistant and the same answers, with different call rules. Many businesses start with after-hours because the choice is simple: nobody is there, so the AI answers.
Start with the callers you already miss
Before you decide, look at your phone log or voicemail for a few weeks. Count the calls that arrived outside your hours. Note which were urgent. That count tells you whether you need all-night coverage or only evenings and weekends. If you also want the assistant to book the visit on the call, see AI appointment booking.
If you would rather set up night coverage yourself, our self-serve AI receptionist PhoneAnswer (phoneanswer.ai) is one option. CallReply (callreply.com) is our done-for-you AI phone agent.
What it costs and what is not included
Phone answering: from $299/month (about 300 minutes). Setup: from $900, usually 2-3 weeks, with the first month included. Prices are as of October 2026.
Not included in any price: domain and hosting, new photography, third-party software subscriptions (billed at cost), SMS carrier registration (A2P 10DLC) and message fees, and AI usage above the plan allowance.
Who this is for, and who it is not for
It suits businesses with real calls outside their hours and someone who can respond to emergencies. If nobody will ever answer an after-hours emergency, an AI cannot fix that. It can only tell callers the truth and take a message. If your after-hours volume is high and every call is a long, sensitive conversation, a human service or an on-call team may suit you better.
